RISE TO NAVAL COMMANDER John Ross was born in
Barsalloch on the southeast coast of Scotland. He entered the Royal Navy at the age of nine as a volunteer and served for three years in the Mediterranean. He then joined the merchant marine and traveled to the
Caribbean and the Baltic. In 1794 he joined the East India Company. He returned to the Royal Navy in 1799 as a midshipman. He then served in the navy during the following wars with Napolean from 1803-1815 and
