Early Photos of London, Ontario

[Album of 53 Original Gelatin Silver Photographs of London, Ontario, Premises of the “McPherson Fruit Company,” and including a Portrait of its General Manager and Future Owner R.R. Scott].

ca. 1903-9. Oblong Octavo (ca. 15x18 cm). 22 grey stock album leaves. With 53 mounted gelatin silver photographs of various sizes, from ca. 11x15 cm (4 ½ x 5 ¾ in) to ca. 3x3 cm (1 ¼ x 1 in). Four photos captioned in negative, the majority also captioned in white ink on the mounts. Period maroon cloth album with gilt-lettered title “Photographs” on the front board. One photo previously removed from the album, a couple of photos mildly faded, but overall a very good album of good interesting photos.

Interesting unusual album with the early 20th-century snapshot photographs of London, Ontario, and several nearby locations, taken by a person most likely associated with the family of A.C. Macpherson, a businessman originally from London (ON), who founded “McPherson Fruit Co.” in Winnipeg in 1883. The album houses over a dozen photos of London (ON), including a birds-eye view with “power houses & C.P.R. bridge,” the Thames River in winter 1904, King Street bridge, Annie Pixley mausoleum, snow slide hills in the High Park (February 1908), the Custom house on Richmond Street decorated for the “old boys reunion, 1905,” Grand Trunk Railway station platform with steam engines, Byron Dam, a railway car of a C.P.R. survey party, two photos of the interior of a town gym, and others. Four interesting photos dated 1903 and related to the “McPherson Fruit Co.” show the process of “Unloading cars at rear of warehouse,” two workers “packing lemons & oranges,” and portray the company’s secretary-treasurer Robert Ross Scott (1857-1924) in his private office. Originally from Ontario (Pickering), Scott would buy the company in 1912, rename it the “Scott Fruit Co.” and turn it into one of the largest Canadian wholesale fruit businesses. One more photo from the group shows a cart and several barrels with apples prepared, as follows from the signs, by “W. Taylor’s orchard” in Dunbarton for “M. Fruit Co., Winnipeg.”
The other photos show a mountain road in Hamilton, “York County beach,” “Pere Marquette engine” and steamer “Melbourne” at Port Stanley, Fort Mississauga, the 1907 train wreck near Caledon, St. Mark’s Anglican Church in Niagara-on-the-Lake, interior of the “Roslyn Rd. house” in Winnipeg, etc. Several family portraits have many names captioned with initials, e.g. “A.R.O.,” “A.M.M.,” “G.E.M.,” and others; a slightly corrected in ink portrait of a young man working with a negative in a dark room is captioned “A.M.M.” (possibly, a member of the MacPherson family). Overall an interesting album with less common views of London (ON) and interesting association with the “McPherson Fruit Co.”.
