Attractive rare collection of large photograph views and panoramas of Rio de Janeiro taken by Augusto Malta Campos, one of Rio's main photographers in the first decade of the 20th century. Appointed the official photographer of the Rio city hall in 1903 (Ermakoff, G. Augusto Malta e o Rio de Janeiro, 1903-1936. Rio de Janeiro, 2009), Malta depicted the city after the large-scale reconstruction driven by its mayor Francisco Pereira Passos (in office: 1902-06) who dreamed of turning the badly planned old capital of the Brazilian republic into the “Paris of the Tropics.” The photos present the vision of a newly modernized city with wide avenues, electric lights, parks, streetcars, and elegant “Belle Époque” buildings. The reconstruction led to the demolition of the old cortiço quarters in central Rio where low-income people lived, and they had to relocate to the city hills, thus establishing the first favelas.
The photos show Botafogo, Santa Teresa, Copacabana, and Tijuca neighbourhoods, Avenida Central (Rio Branco), Avenida do Mangue, Praça 15 de Novembro, Praça da Gloria, Praça Tiradente, Praça da Republica, Largo do Machado, Rua do Passeio, Rua da Carioca, Theatro Municipal, Caiza de Amortisaçao, Palacio Monroe, Botanical Garden, general view of the Brazilian National Exposition of 1908, the Polytechnic School, Corpo de Bombeiros, Quartel do Batalhão Naval, Secretaria da Agricultura, tracks of the Corvocado rack railway, Sugarloaf and Pedra da Gávea Mountains, etc. The photos are sharp and detailed, with numerous signs on the buildings clearly visible. Overall a rare collection of large and detailed views of Rio de Janeiro.
