All photos with original printed captions on the mounts, each tissue guard with the printed name of the photographer “O. Sainati – Photographo, Campinas.”. Period style dark green half morocco album with cloth boards and spine with raised bands. Photos with mild silvering and some images with two very small wormholes, several mounts with mild water stains, but overall a very good album with rare interesting photos.
Rare collection of large early original photos of the Brazilian Mogiana Railway (Companhia Mogiana de Estradas de Ferro, 1872-1971), a private enterprise which connected the coastal ports with the famous Mogiana coffee plantations in the northeast part of the Sao Paulo State and eventually with the Triangulo Mineiro in the Minas Gerais State. By the 1920s the railway developed a network of almost 2000 kilometres of lines, with several branches and about 150 stations, and built its own steam locomotives, passenger cars, freight wagons and parts in its spacious workshop in the Campinas headquarters. In 1971 due to financial difficulties the Mogiana railway was incorporated into the state-owned FEPASA railway network which launched a large-scale project to reconstruct and electrificy the Mogiana Railway. As a result, the route was straightened and directed away from major cities, and many stations were abandoned; passenger trains stopped running on the line in 1997. Nowadays only two old Mogiana tracks are still in use for cargo transportation (the main line between Campinas and Araguari and the Ramal de Caldas branch), a tourist heritage train runs between Campinas and Jaguarina.
The album contains thirty-nine professional photos of the Mogiana stations, bridges and trains, and was evidently produced to promote the railway; the photos were taken by a photographer from Campinas, the city where Mogiana’s headquarters and main workshop were located. The images focus on the main Mogiana line roughly between Jaguarina and Cravinhos, giving a great overview of the stations’ structure and architectural styles and often showing signs with the stations’ names. Many photos also feature station officials and locals, train cars and steam locomotives (the one depicted near the Cocaes station bears a clear sign in the front “Companhia Mogyana de Estradas de Ferro. 1”), station cafes, posters on the walls, altitude signs etc. Overall a beautiful detailed visual source on the early history of the Mogiana Railway and Brazil in general.
