Ca. 1930s. Oblong Octavo (ca. 13,5x22,5 cm). 47 card stock leaves (18 blank). With 23 mounted real photo postcards ca. 8x13 cm (3 ¼ x 5 in), ten smaller studio photos ca. 6,5x10 cm (2 ½ x 4 in) and 48 original gelatin silver photographs, from ca. 7,5x10 cm (2 ¾ x 4 in) to ca. 5x7,5 cm (2x3 in). All real photo postcards captioned and numbered in negative; about twenty original photos with period white pencil captions on the mounts (several photos with “McGregor Studio” ink stamps on verso, dated 1938). Period brown full cloth album with a blind stamped title “Fotografs” and a coloured landscape scene on the front board. Front cover with a tear on the connection with the stub, several mounts with minor tears on the margins, two photos removed from the album by previous owners, but overall a very good album.
Interesting photos show the main deck of “Chiloil,” the interior of the steering wheel room, a group portrait of sailors posing with the “Chiloil” ring buoy (with an ink stamp dated “1938” on verso), Rio de Janeiro harbour, Rio street views (Monroe House, Canal do Mangue, Theatro Municipal, etc.), streets of Santos, workers loading coffee in Santos, streets of Montevideo (showing Palacio Legislativo), and others. The twenty-three real photo postcards of Santos show: Vista Parcial (two different views), Estatua Gafrée Guinle, Kursal (Gonzaga), [a street view of] Gonzaga, Av. Anna Costa Gonzaga, Alfandega, Praia, Jose Menino, Praia do Guarujá (two different views), Ponte Pencil, Praia do Gonzaga, Praia Itarare, São Vicente (five different views), Recanto na Ilha Porchat (two different views), Valongo, Ponta da Praia. Small studio photos include general and street views of Rio de Janeiro. Overall an attractive album with well-preserved original photos and real photo postcards reflecting on voyages to Brazil of an American sailor in the 1930s. US Shipping Board Tanker “Chiloil” was built in 1920 as “Kehuku,” renamed in 1926 and scraped for metal in 1947; it was operated by the “Tanrkers Oceanic Corp.,” Delaware (Merchant Vessels of the United States, Year ended June 30, 1936.
