Extensive Collection of Photos of Lima, Peru

Ca. 1920. Oblong Quarto (ca. 21x29 cm). 20 card stock leaves (2 blank). With 182 mounted original gelatin silver photographs, including 119 larger photos ca. 7,5x9,5 cm (3 x 3 ¼ in), the rest are ca. 4x5,5 cm (1 ½ x 2 in). All but three photos are captioned and/or dated in ink on the margins. Period black faux leather covers fastened with a string, gilt lettered title “Photographs” on the front cover. One photo with the right lower corner torn off, two small photos removed from the album by previous owners, but overall a very good album with interesting photos.

Interesting collection of lively original snapshot photos taken by an American traveller to Peru, who left New York in March 1920 and went to Lima on board the“Santa Luisa” steamship via the Panama Canal; he stayed in Lima for about two months, returning to New York on the same steamer in July 1920. The trip apparently had commercial purposes, and there is reason to connect the traveller with the New York-based “Grace & Co.,” a major maritime steamship company in Peru, and a founder of the “Panagro” airline which connected the United States with the west coast of South America in 1928. The album contains over a dozen portraits of the compiler’s companions on board the “Santa Luisa” (which belonged to the “Grace & Co.”) and the same people in Lima, with three photographed at their office desks. The compiler captioned many names, including Tom Stokes (on a Callao street, Apr. 9), a group of Americans dining in La Punta (Williams, Sears, Blankenbeckler, Trout, Apr. 11), Simpson (at the desk, June 1920), “Troutt, Williams” (in office, June 1920), “Floyd Sears”, “Petter”, “Williams, Blankenbeckler, Simpson, Apr. 19,” “At Lima Racetrack, Sears, Blank., Williams, ?, D. Rinderman, Reynolds, Baumann, June 13,” and others. One of the men, Floyd Sears worked as a “stenographer for a steamship company in Lima, Peru, 1920-1923; appointed Consular Agent at Salaverry, October 1, 1923” (Register of the Department of State, January 1, 1928. Washington, 1928, p. 197). Two small photos show the offices of “Grace & Co.” and “Milne & Co.” (Peruvian agents for a British “Lobitos Oilfields Ltd.” In the 1920s); there are also three photos of “My house in Lima,” “my Lima residence” (an elegant two-storey mansion), and “my room at Lima.”
Over a hundred views of Lima show its streets, squares and parks, Callao harbour (with “Santa Luisa”), Callao, La Punta and Chorillos neighbourhoods, Paseo Colon, Callao railroad, Plaza Zela, Plaza de Armas, Beneficencia de Lima (renowned charitable society) and its “baby window,” Lima racecourse and races, the Park of the Exposition (and zoo animals), several views of a bullfight (including a “presentation of airplane, Apr. 18”), Grand Hotel Maury, Lima Cathedral, the Rimac River, Lima golf club, a team of “Lima fire department,” “native market,” “Shipp and Feltus circus”, “a breakdown at Lima” (a horse-driven cart with a broken wheel), etc. There are also interesting portraits of “Pres. Leguia of Peru” at the racecourse, “Aviator Simon” (in a hospital bed), Lima fruit vendors, candy vendor, “milk woman,” “Chola family,” beggars, a street seller “making doughnuts,” and others. About nine small photos show Lima environs and the Andes where the compiler travelled in June 1920 - “Chola Indian,” “Inca cemetery,” “Ferro Carril Central de Peru,” Ancon, Low Andes, Chancay Valley, Rontoy, and others.
Over twenty views depict the compiler’s outward and backward voyage on “Santa Luisa” - scenes on board, portraits of travel companions with many names captioned (Anderson, Mr. & Mrs. Cheney, Dr. O’Farrell, Floyd Sears, Donnegan, Henry Thoelen, Griswold, Lansing, Williams, Labarre, Morgan), the celebration of crossing the Equator (5 April). About thirty photos show different parts of the Panama Canal (Colon, Gatun Locks, emergency dam, Gatun Lake, Culebra Cut, Pedro Miguel Lock, Miraflores Lock, Panama city, Pacific entrance, outlet & house of Canal Zone commander, government houses in Canal Zone,” etc.). There are also several views of New York (dated March 25-27 and July 1-4),
Overall an attractive collection of interesting photos of Lima and Peru, with a connection to American business activities in Lima.
