Rare Early Wide-Angle Photos of Gibraltar

[Collection of Fifteen Wide Angle Albumen Photos of Gibraltar].

Ca. 1890s. Fifteen loose albumen photos, each ca. 13,5x21,5 cm (5 ¼ x 8 ½ in), each mounted on original card ca. 15x30 cm (5 ¾ x 11 ¾ in). All photos unsigned, no captions. The cards are with all edges gilt. A couple of images mildly faded, some cards with minor scratches on extremities, but overall a very good set.

An interesting rare collection of late 19th-century wide-angle photographs of Gibraltar. The photos include general views of the Rock and the city taken from the sea, and closer views of Gibraltar’s harbour and port, the road to Spain (with what looks like installations for the border control), Southport Gates, naval batteries (the photo of Gardiner’s Battery features a partly-obscured sign in the background reading “…ers battery”), the Moorish Castle and the Grand Casemates Square, La Alameda Gardens, a small coastal settlement, fortifications on the Rock, and others. Two photos show a town and a Berber camp in most likely Northern Africa, with camels, horses, tents and people in traditional gowns. Overall a very nice collection of large sound photos of Gibraltar.
