Ca. 1861-1864. Oblong Quarto album (ca. 20x26,5 cm). 41 paper leaves. With thirty-two full-page pencil drawings, seven smaller watercolours and several small pencil sketches. The majority with period pencil captions and dates on the lower margins. Manuscript pencil title, written by the artist on the inner side of the front cover. Period brown patterned papered boards with flower ornaments, neatly rebacked. Gilt-tooled title “Album” on the front cover. Several album leaves slightly age-toned or with occasional foxing, one leaf has been previously removed, but overall a very good album of attractive well-executed sketches.
Attractive collection of original drawings and watercolours by an upper-class English lady, offering a romantic representation of some iconic and lesser-known locations in Italy, Switzerland, Greece and Turkey. The artist, Georgina Anne Brummell, was a daughter of Sir William Brummell (1777-1853), the owner of the Wivenhoe estate (Essex) and the older brother to the Regency dandy George “beau Brummell” (1778-1840). In 1831 she married baronet Sir Thomas Piggot (1796-1847), Captain of the Royal Horse Guards, and had two children. After his death, she married again in 1855 to John Frederick Baillie of Leys Castle, Inverness (ca. 1800-1865).
The drawings date back to the time of her travels across the Mediterranean in the 1860s. Views of the streets of Pisa, Venice and Livorno neighbour with panoramic vistas of the Alps, French and Italian Riviera, Lake Como, Greek Islands, Gallipoli, etc. Five album leaves show watercolour figures of Greek and Turkish men and women (“old Turkish woman,” “Corfu bride,” a man from “Stamboul,” “Corfu, Jan. 1st, 1863,” etc.). One of the last leaves bears a manuscript note, talking about the route or Lady Pigott’s “Tour in 1863. Corfu, Cephalonia, Zante [Zakynthos], Gulf of Patras, Gulf of Corinth, Kalamacki, Athens, Smyrna, Constantinople, Sira [Syros], Corfu. Tour - April & May 1863”. Then follows a list of British members of the travelling party. Overall an attractive album of original drawings and watercolours of the Mediterranean depicted by a female artist in the second half of the 19th century.
