Interesting collection of original snapshot photos of Haida Gwaii, Northern BC and the Interior, taken by a serviceman of the Pacific Coast Militia Rangers (1942-45), a military volunteer organization formed to patrol and defend the coastline of British Columbia and Yukon against a possible Japanese invasion during WW2. PCMR mostly recruited loggers, trappers, prospectors, and ranchers who naturally had excellent knowledge of the local topography and terrain. The album contains over a dozen photos showing PCMR leaders and companies in training, i.e. portraits of “Col. Coote” (Lieut.-Col. A.L. Coote, commander of the Rangers’ Lower Fraser Valley division), “Capt. Buller, Bella Coola” (commander of the PCMR company No. 74, Bella Coola), “O.[skar] Bainbridge, Bella Bella” (commander of the PCMR company No. 75, Bella Bella), “M. Dubeau, Terrace” (commander of the PCMR company No. 70, Terrace), PCMR companies marching in Aiyansh, training in Vernon, posing for a group portrait in Bella Bella, Aiyansh, and Sardis (the latter one with the sign in the background reading “Pacific Coast Militia Rangers”), etc. A portrait of three men near Skeena River features M. Dubeau. There are also four photos of a procession of military men and civilians, carrying British flags and accompanied by a brass orchestra, apparently taken in Northern BC.
Over twenty photos of Haida Gwaii show the logging camps of the “North Coast Log Co., Skidegate Lake,” “Aero Timber Co., Cumshewa,” “Kelly Log Co., Church Creek, Cumshewa Inlet,” and “150’ logs, Davis Raft, N. Coast Log Co.,” Quatsino Sound, Skidegate Inlet, Tlell River, Cumshewa Inlet, Masset, “plank Rd., Tlell - Pr. Clements,” “E.[ric] S. Richardson’s House” (the first owner of the Richardson beef ranch next to Tlell and a commander of PCMR’s company No. 96, Queen Charlotte City), etc.
Over sixty photos of Northern BC show government patrol boat “Naskeena,” Greenville (Laxqaltsʼap village, showing its Anglican church and its priest), the “Naas” (Nass) River, Kincolith (Gingolx), Kitkatla, Aiyansh, “Lava bed, Canyon City” (Gitwinksihlkw), Portland Canal, Pt. Simpson, settlements on the Skeena River, Bella Bella, Hartley Bay, Kitselas Mt., “Tabor Lake, Pr. George,” “Pinchi Lake,” “Tachi Village, Takla Lake,” “Stuart River, Ft. St. James,” “Nechako River, Vanderhoof,” “Bulkley R., Smithers,” Bella Coola (the old village, native canoes, a cow herd, children on a street), etc. There are also photos of various towns and sites in the BC Interior (Merritt, Sicamous, Armstrong, Salmon Arm, Vernon, Oliver, Penticton, Kelowna, Kamloops, several views and portraits from the Guichon family ranch, Avola, “North Thompson, 1943,” Sorrento, Scotch Creek, Blue River), three views of “[logging] Camp 3, Cowichan Lake” (Vancouver Island), views of White Rock and Old Fort Langley, etc. Overall an interesting collection of original photos showing Haida Gwaii, Northern BC, and BC Interior, and the PCMR activities and leaders in these regions.
