Rare Interesting Photos of Ghana by a British Biologist

[Album with ca. 180 Original Vernacular Gelatin Silver Photographs, Taken and Collected by a British Biologist during his “Specie Trip” to the Gold Coast in ca. 1938-1940 and Illustrating His Field Trips to the Densu River Delta, Volta River, Oda and Sekondi; There are also Views of Ghanaian Coastal Castles, Accra’s Streets, the Destruction in Accra after the 1939 Earthquake, Koforidua, Anomabu, Portraits of Ghanaian Fishermen, Families, Girls (with an Emphasis on Their Hairstyles), “Accra Nurses, 1939,” “a Witch Doctor, Accra,” the Album’s Compiler and His Fellow Scientists, &c.].

Ca. 1938-1940. Oblong Quarto album ca. 23x28 cm (8x11 in). 29 card stock leaves. With ca. 180 mounted gelatin silver photos, including a dozen large images from ca. 15,5x20,5 cm (6 ¼ x 8 in) to ca. 14,5x14 cm (5 ¾ x 5 ½ in); the rest of the photos are from ca. 11x15,5 cm (4 ¼ x 6 in) to ca. 5x6 cm (1 ¼ x 2 ¼ in). Most photos with period white pencil manuscript captions or photographers’ credits on the mounts (some captions relate to several images). First leaf with a hand-drawn map of the Gold Coast (in white pencil). Period brown “Clyde” album with semi-flexible boards and a cloth spine. Binding mildly rubbed on extremities, corners slightly bumped, but overall a very good album with strong interesting photographs.

Attractive extensive collection of original photos of the Gold Coast Colony (modern-day Ghana), taken and collected by a young British biologist during his “specie trip” there in 1938-40. The album illustrates the compiler’s voyage to Accra on the British merchant vessel “Apapa,” his field trips to the deltas of the Densu and Volta Rivers, trips to Volta River around Senchi and Anum, “Oda” (most likely, Akim Oda in western Ghana) and Sekondi, and his life in Accra.
The photos from the “specie trips” or related to biological research in Ghana include two views of the “Achimota college & forest reserve,” photos of “the eggs and the home of black-winged stilt,” and five images of the Densu River delta, now a protected area: “Johnson (Achimota), biologist, looking for aquatic life in the Densu River,” “Densu River, Sekamu,” “self & Jonah swim in Sekamu lagoon.” Seventeen photos illustrate the compiler’s trip up the Volta River in December 1939 as far as Senchi and Anum. The photos show Volta River, Senchi ferry and “old Cato who looks after [Senchi ferry],” local people, the party’s guides “watching for monkeys,” the compiler’s companions “R.B.P.,” “J.D.” and “Vera Foote.” The latter was known as a collector of specimens of marine algae and plants in the Gold Coast Colony in the late 1940s (see Dickinson, C.I. Marine Algae from the Gold Coast// Kew Bulletin, Vol. 6, No. 2 (1951), pp. 293-297; Syntype of Gloiophloea verae C.I. Dickinson: Herbarium specimen/ Natural History Museum, https://plants.jstor.org/stable/10.5555/al.ap.specimen.bm001043872). Eight photos from the trip to Sekondi portray the compiler and his fellow scientist (“Bridgman-Evans”) with a bird’s net, “specie car & escort, Kumasi express,” “bank bungalow,” and Cemetery Beach at Sekondi. There are also six uncaptioned portraits and scenes from field trips (one identifies the pictured people as “E.F., E.B. & C.D.J.”), and several photos from the “specie trip to Oda” (likely, Akim Oda in western Ghana), showing a “nest of weaver bird,” “a heron’s nest in a mango tree,” the traveller’s car and guards.
The album also contains a series of attractive views of the Ghanaian coastal castles, including Christiansborg (Osu Castle) and Elmina Castle, “Fort Adam,” beach near Senya Beraku, a view from “castle ramparts, Anamabu” (Fort William, Anomabu), &c. The views of Accra show the “Coronation anniversary ceremonial parade” of local troops, High Street, Labadi beach, “fish mammies surround canoe returning with haul,” a public outdoors dining. Eight photos depict the destruction in Accra after the earthquake on June 22, 1939. A series of ten photos under the general title “Specie trip, 1938” illustrate “how money from the mint is landed in Accra” (with a British officer and police escort unloading boxes with money and transporting it to lorries to get to the bank). A photo on the same page shows “U.K. mail arriving, (heavy work done by prisoners under supervision).”
The other photos show a “juju temple in village,” “bush house hotel,” palm avenues and gardens at Aburi, “Infra-red photograph of Accra plains from Aburi scarp (by G.S. Cansdale),” “falls near Koforidua,” “ants-eye view, Koforidua, Sept. 3rd, 1939,” “Mangoase station,” “Bedoso bridge,” a scene of “sacrificial ceremony to sea god, Anamabu,” native villages and markets. Numerous portraits of Ghanaian people depict women washing clothes, families, girls (with an emphasis on their hairstyles), fishermen, “Accra nurses, 1939,” “a witch doctor, Accra,” “chief constable & wife, Adam Fort.” Several captions to these photos attribute them to “R.W. Hauri” or “C.D.J.” There are also several portraits of the compiler and his colleagues and friends, riding cars, having meals, relaxing on a beach or on board the “D[istrict]. C[ommissioner’s] launch.” Six pictures at the front illustrate the voyage to the Gold Coast on board the merchant vessel “Apapa” and show Madeira, Bathurst (Banjul, Gambia), Freetown and the compiler’s travel companions in Las Palmas.
