6[ASIA - VIETNAM - TONKIN] DIEULEFILS, Pierre-Marie (1862-1937), and others

[Album with 68 Large Original Albumen and Gelatin Silver Photographs of Tonkin (Northern Vietnam), Showing Hanoi, Haiphong, Viet Tri, Lang Son and Song Ky Cung River, Lao Cai and the Red River (Song Hong), Do Son, Bat Bac, Bao Ha, My Tho, Black River (Song Da) near Cho Bo, and Ha Long Bay, Destruction of a Settlement Caused by a Typhoon, a Group Portrait of “Famille de Koat, chef pirate soumis,” &c.].

Ca. 1880s. Oblong small Folio album ca. 22,5x31 cm (8 ¾ x 12 ¼ in). 34 card stock leaves. With 68 mounted albumen and gelatin silver photos of similar size, from ca. 19x23 cm (7 ½ x 9 in) to ca. 16,5x22,5 cm (6 ½ x 8 ¾ in). 34 photos are numbered and captioned in French in negative; two photos are also signed “P. Dieulefils, Hanoi” in negative. Period dark green half morocco album with dark green pebbled cloth boards; spine with raised bands; decorative endpapers. Binding rubbed on extremities and slightly discoloured; some mounts with traces of wear that show photos were remounted by the compiler on mounts of previously removed images; some photos show signs of being remounted with minor wear. Several photos mildly faded, but overall an interesting collection of strong photos.

Historically interesting collection of large original photos of the French protectorate of Tonkin (modern-day northern Vietnam), with a series of images by a noted colonial photographer Pierre-Marie Dieulefils. Two photos from the album bear his signature in negative; Dieulefils also published several as postcards under his name. The album includes over a dozen captioned or identified views of Hanoi, showing the race course, French colonial buildings and Turtle Tower on the “Petit” (Hoan Kiem) Lake, “Grand Lac” (West Lake) and Pagode du Grand Bouddha, Rue Paul Bert (now Trang Tien Street), the entrance gate to the “Balny pagoda” (Voi Phuc temple), St. Joseph’s Cathedral, decorated with two large French flags (and with a crowd of French and Vietnamese residents), &c. The other identified photos show the town of Viet Tri northwest of Hanoi (general view, French military cantonment), Haiphong (river bank and piers, steamers of the “Compagnie Messageries Fluviales”), Lang Son (general view with the Song Ky Cung River, French colonial residence), Do Son and the shore of the Gulf of Tonkin, a French military post in Bat Bac, Bao Ha village, Lao Cai and the Red River, My Tho (French colonial administration building, a street near the quay), Ban Thi (blockhouse), “Long Giai” (blockhouse), Black River (Song Da) near Cho Bo, and Ha Long Bay. Four photos show the destruction of a settlement in Tonkin, evidently caused by a typhoon, and another photo from the series depicts a French colonial residence before the disaster, thus allowing us to compare the building’s “before” and “after” conditions. Two earlier photos apparently show the ruins of Angkor Wat still covered by overgrown vegetation. The other images show city streets, villages, houseboats, a railway bridge, buffalos dragging carts, &c. The album also contains a group portrait of “Famille de Koat, chef pirate soumis” (Dieulefils also printed the image as a postcard, and according to its caption, the original photo was taken in Hai Duong). Overall, a nice collection of large early original photos of Hanoi and northern Vietnam. A list of captions: 40. Hippodrome de Hanoi. Pelouse; 505. Viet-Tri. Cantonnement des Turcos; 564. Hanoi.
